Blasting Off with Wind Tunnel Tech

So, what’s the secret? It's all down to our immense wind tunnels for skydiving. These giant fans are marvels of engineering. They create streams of air strong enough to lift you right off your feet. They’re a bit like a massive vacuum cleaner in reverse – air is sucked up through the flight chamber at speeds of over 120 mph! This creates a smooth, stable column of air that allows you to hover, dip, and soar as if you were in a freefall, without having to leave the solidity of the earth.

Aerodynamics Unleashed

Want to know the science of soaring in our vertical wind tunnels? Aerodynamics is crucial in indoor skydiving. It examines how air moves around solid objects. When you’re in the tunnel, your body acts like an aeroplane wing. Change your shape slightly, and you change the way air moves around you, enabling you to control your flight. For instance, if you spread your arms or lean forward, these alter your movement direction and stability. Want to go up? Flatten out. Spin right? Dip a shoulder. It’s physics in action.

Understanding Air Resistance

Air resistance, or drag, is the force you battle against as you float on the air. This force counters the motion of an object through the air, influencing how fast or freely you can move. But in the air tunnel, you use it to your advantage to stabilise and steer. When you adjust your body’s position, you can manage the drag, master your movements, and feel first-hand how changes in body shape and surface area can affect your glide through the air column. It’s a bit like adjusting a parachute but far more immediate and, dare we say, more elating.

From the Classroom to the Tunnel

Aside from a lot of airborne antics, our STEM sessions involve real learning, too. Before taking flight, students get access to a crash course (not literally!) in the physics of flight. They learn about forces, energy, motion, and yes, even a bit about how to fly! Then on the day, it's suits on, goggles down, and into the tunnel they go to see theory put into breathtaking practice.
