Steve Rottier has recently been appointed as Assistant General Manager at iFLY Manchester. We asked Steve about his iFLY journey, and what he enjoys most about being part of the team.
Congratulations on your promotion of becoming Assistant General Manager at iFLY Manchester, are you looking forward to getting stuck into your new role?
Yes, I have a lot to learn in my new role as AGM, but I’m looking forward to the challenges the role brings. Dan Sanjuan is helping a lot with my integration, and with support from the staff and management team, I hope I will succeed.
How long have you worked at iFLY Manchester?
I’ve worked at iFLY Manchester for approx 6 years now. I started as a Receptionist in August 2013, then moved into Instructing July 2014. My aim was always to be an instructor, I just had to wait for a position to open up and then complete the 4-week course. The training course is mentally and physically challenging, but once completed it was a huge achievement!
How did you get into Indoor Skydiving? Are you a skydiver?
I came in as a customer just passing by and ended up going to reception and asking for an application form. I had done a tandem skydive in Cairns, Australia so had the taste for flying, but had no other experience in the industry at all. After a few years of being an Indoor Skydiving Instructor, I went to Skydive Spain with a fellow colleague and we did an AFF 7-day package which included everything, and you leave fully licenced ready to jump solo. It has to be one of the best things I have done!
What is your favourite thing about working at iFLY?
Flying disabled people, that never thought they would be able to do it, and the happiness/effect you can see it has on them. A key moment from this has been watching Glen Mills journey, I was her solo instructor for approx 1 year and now she has built confidence in herself and she can now fly with other instructors. Glen now flies every week with any instructor, and loves the thrill of flying, she is a fully proficient flyer.
Apart from Indoor Skydiving, have you got any other hobbies?
My main hobbies are motorbike riding and outdoor skydiving at Skydive Northwest (Cark) & Black Knights Parachute Centre.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself...
I played for Great Britain hockey team, I won Silver medal in the World competition in Detroit, Michigan 2005.
